1. Daisy seeds can be sown directly into your garden. They will begin to bloom the second year after planting.

2. Nearly all daisies are perennials—they'll come back year after year. African daisies are an exception; they are annuals and must be replanted.

3. If you want daisies to bloom in the first year, you should start your seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost of the year.

 4. Since it is already late April, if you want daisies to bloom this year in your garden, purchase young plants from your local gardening center. They will also be knowledgable about specific types of plants that will do well for your geographical area.

5. Daisies need frequent water only until the roots take hold. Afterwards, only water in times of drought or if they look extremely dry.

 6. Daisies look delicate but are actually pretty tough and are rarely bothered by insects. Beginner gardeners love them because of their success rate!

7. Daisies look great when planted in clusters. However, if you overcrowd your garden, the plants might produce small blooms.

8. We deliver flowers to British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan... these are all places where the temps can drop significantly in winter. If you live in a colder climate, you will want to protect your daisy bed in the winter with a heavy mulch.

In March, April, and May countries across the world honor mothers with a day dedicated to giving thanks for all they do. Although festivals to highlight motherhood can be traced back as far as ancient Greek times, most countries have adopted the modern North American Mother’s Day celebrations by giving moms flower arrangements, gifts, dinner, and perhaps a break from the never-ending pile of laundry.

Speaking of never-ending laundry... we learned that the highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is a whopping 69! She was a peasant woman who was the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev of Shuya, Russia. Between the years 1725 and 1765 she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets!

Alstroemeria is sometimes called the Inca Lily or the Peruvian Lily. They look similar to miniature lilies with a trumpet-like flower head off of a short stalk. Several flowers spring from each individual stem.

It was originally found growing wild in Peru, Brazil, and Chile. A Swedish botanist named Claas Alstroemer brought the pretty little flower to Europe in the 18th century. Many hybrids have been developed and breeding has led to many varieties and colours of Alstroemeria available today.

Alstroemeria is a strong flower that is easy to care for. It looks fabulous in mixed flower delivery gifts, but can also be used to create stand-alone bouquets.

Alstroemeria that arrives on your doorstep with small, green buds has long life left in the flower bouquet. Alstroemeria opens quickly and petals within will soon burst forth, just as the mini-bouquets in our flower delivery gifts burst from the cards they come inside. Alstroemeria have a vase life of about two weeks.

You might notice that Alstroemeria have unique leaves that twist from their base. Some say the Alstroemeria is a flower that denotes friendship and devotion. The fact that the leaves twist and present themselves upside-down are said to symbolize the twists, turns, and growth of friendship.

If you decide to grow Alstroemeria in your garden, you need to know they prefer a well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. They will tolerate part-shade if you live in warmer climates, but grow best in the warmth of a full-sun spot. If you have fresh-cut Alstroemeria, the water that your bouquet is in should be kept clean and the leaves should be kept from contaminating the water.

The deadline for ordering for flower delivery in Western Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) by Valentine’s Day is February 10. Sending flowers was considered to be a token of love long before anyone marked February 14th as a special day on the calendar.

The Roman goddess, Venus, and the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, were both considered to be symbols of love, fertility, beauty and pleasure. They were often portrayed in garden settings adorned with flowers. Flower gifts were associated in ancient Roman and Greek times with feelings of love and romance.

Fast-forward to the Victorian era, where an entire language called floriography was developed. It was a means of communicating messages, which could otherwise not be spoken, based upon the types of flowers and arrangements sent. Even the scent of a particular flower on a handkerchief conveyed a special meaning.

The sizes of the flowers selected, the type of arrangement, even the use of the right or left hand in the flower delivery, revealed thoughts from the sender. This is when roses really made their way to the forefront of flower gifts.

Roses were the selected flower gift to represent deep feelings of love. Even the different colors of roses selected had meaning. Here are some of the single color meanings historically assigned to rose colors:

Yellow: joy, friendship
Yellow with red tip: falling in love
Coral: desire

Color combinations and the number of roses given also had significance in Victorian times. Men seriously had to know their stuff!
